Listen to Obituary

Zecharyah Mathew Garza Rios, age 16. “Zman” as we so lovingly called him, returned to the arms of Jesus after a long and courageous battle with congenital heart disease. Zman was born in San Angelo, Texas, and moved to San Antonio, Texas, after his health declined to be closer to his amazing care team at Methodist Children’s Hospital and Dell Children’s Hospital. Zman was our real-life superhero from the moment he entered this world, facing every challenge with strength that inspired everyone who knew him. Though his heart was fragile, his spirit was unbreakable. Zman was full of joy and laughter; his silly sense of humor and infectious giggle could light up any room. He loved all things Spiderman, Disney, and Sonic the Hedgehog, and his room was his happy place filled with the toys and characters he loved the most. Whether he was watching his favorite movies or playing surrounded by his treasures, Zman found magic in the little things. Despite countless surgeries and hospital stays, Zman faced every obstacle with bravery. He was a reminder that strength isn’t measured by years but by the courage to keep smiling. He was and always will be our greatest gift, a true reflection of God’s grace, joy, and love. His time here was far too short, but his impact will last forever.

He is survived by his parents Kristy and Ruben Rios from San Antonio, siblings Edward and Polly Rios, Grandparents Jessica and Freddie Graves, Brent Holtz, Aunt Crystal Munoz, Uncle Dakota Holtz, Great-Grandparents Marciano and Nelia Garza, Great-Uncle Marcus Garza and wife Gretel Garza, Great-Uncle Marciano Garza Jr and wife Yolanda Garza, Great-Aunts Irma Stewart, Norma Garcia, Godparents Bevie and Andree Jackson, and numerous cousins and friends. Also, a special mention to his many nurses who cared for him at home throughout the years, his physicians, and last but not least, his best friend and companion, Trunks the Make-A-Wish Golden Retriever. He is preceded in death by his Great-Uncle Gregg Stewart, Grandmother Delia “Polly” Morin, and Great-Grandmothers Maria Graves, Maria Lopez, and Rosa Garza.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for our mighty hero, Zman. You gave him a heart stronger than any superhero’s — full of courage, laughter, and love. Though his cape has been lifted to Heaven, we know he’s flying high with You now, free from pain and full of joy. Help us carry his light, his bravery, and his smile into every day until we meet again in Your glory. Amen.
