William Joseph Flood, 65, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, October 31, 2025, in San Antonio, TX.
Bill, as he was commonly known, was born on May 11, 1960, in Wausaukee, WI, to John (JW) and Lucille Flood. Bill went on to join the Navy in 1981, serving honorably on the USS Enterprise (CVN-65), USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70), and USS Elliot (DD-967), in deployments to countries including Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Guam, Singapore, UAE, Bahrain, Australia, Fiji, Thailand, the Philippines, Oman, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, Japan, and Iraq. While in the Navy, his friends and compatriots described him as having high professional standards and always leading by example.
Following his retirement from the Navy, Bill graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Texas San Antonio, with a Bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. Bill had a passion for educating the next generation, as well as providing a good example of what a true leader looks like.
Bill was a lifelong cheesehead and fanatically supported his Green Bay Packers every Sunday. His other hobbies included reading spy and mystery novels, tending to his garden, traveling (especially to national parks), and demonstrating his elite cooking skills for family and friends, particularly with his daughter. Bill was an animal lover who doted over his dogs Sammy, Veeda, and Noxie, his cats Rory, Abby, and Honey, and his backyard birds, hummingbirds, deer, and squirrels. Bill was a lifelong avid golfer and enjoyed playing with his loved ones and friends, especially his son. Bill was best known for his piety and love of God. He was a lifelong, devoted Catholic and exuded kindness to everyone he met. Bill never met a stranger and was known to make friends everywhere he went. His best friend recalls a time when, on Christmas morning in the late 1980s, Bill got together a huge box of gently used clothing. He wrote on the box, “Merry Christmas, Help yourself,” and placed the box in a small park in Escondido, California, where many homeless people resided.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, John W. and Lucille Flood, and brothers James and John T. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Maria, his daughter Deanna and her husband Miguel, his son Christopher, and his brothers Kevin of Niagara, WI, and Richard of Carmel, IN.
If there is a message one can take from Bill’s life and untimely death, it is to make the most with the hand you are dealt in life, and never let your current situation prevent you from demonstrating kindness to others. Bill was taken from us far too soon, and his absence will be deeply felt until we meet again.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Meals on Wheels San Antonio and the San Antonio Food Bank, two organizations dear to Bill’s heart.
