Robert J. Gilleland, known to many as Bob, passed away on September 24, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on November 3, 1939, in Boerne, Texas, and lived a life marked by love for his family, a lively spirit, and the simple joys that brought him happiness.
Bob will be remembered as a man with a quick wit and a playful nature. He enjoyed teasing those around him, and that sense of humor left lasting smiles with the people who knew and loved him. He loved his family deeply, and that love remained at the center of his life.
He found pleasure in many pastimes that reflected both his curiosity and his companionship with others. Bob loved playing cards and dominoes, activities that surely brought conversation, laughter, and time shared with family and friends. He also enjoyed shooting and was an avid reader. Among the subjects that especially held his interest were World War II, guns, and airplanes, and he took clear enjoyment in learning more about the things that fascinated him.
Above all, Bob’s life was enriched by the people he loved. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Gilleland, and by his children, Debbie (Bryon) Ford, Diane Hammer, and Robert “Bob” Gilleland. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Nelson (Cecilia) Hammer, Brice (Hannah) Capson, Laura Callie Hansen, Wyatt J. Ford, and Kaitlyn Gilleland, as well as his great-grandchildren, Barbara (Tom) Howard and Leslie Gilleland. Each of them carries forward memories of his humor, his interests, and the love he gave so freely.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wilson Gilleland; his mother, Laura Gilleland; his granddaughter, Stephanie; and his sister-in-law, Paula Gilleland and many other beloved family members.
A graveside service will be held Nov. 7th at the Sabinal Cemetery. Time TBD
Bob will be remembered with affection for his sharp mind, his teasing spirit, and the love he had for his family. His memory will remain a lasting part of the lives of those who knew him and loved him.
In lieu of flowers section the family request that donations be made to the Sabinal Cemetery or the Utopia EMS in his name.
