Martha L. "Marty" Halstead

December 10, 1939 — March 20, 2023

Martha L. “Marty” Halstead born December 10, 1939, passed to meet her loved ones and the Lord on March 20, 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents Carl J. Hehmsoth and Helen L. Hehmsoth (Zuehl), and daughter-in-law Margery C. Halstead. Marty is survived by her brothers Carl Hehmsoth and Hank Hehmsoth; children Bud Halstead and his wife Debbie Halstead, Nathan Halstead and his wife Lisa Halstead, and Heidi Halstead; grandchildren Alina Johnson, Zachary Halstead, Jake Halstead, Emily Halstead; and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and their families.

As a child, Marty was a Girl Scout, and as a mom, she volunteered as Scout Leader both for the Boy Scouts with Bud & Nat, and Brownies/Girl Scouts with Heidi. Although she graduated from Texas Lutheran College (now TLU), Marty was a devoted Aggie, and watched hundreds of Texas A&M football games, especially enjoying the Aggie Marching Band. She hosted parties for kids and friends throughout her life. She loved watching PBS and classic movies, and read thousands of books, especially mysteries. Her curiosity of life, and love to friends and family knew no boundaries.

Marty’s love was to serve others and bring them joy. A passionate crafter, baker, cook, gardener, and choir member, Marty baked goodies for her church groups (choir, quilters, prayer shawl group, and potluck meals), neighbors and friends, yard guys, car mechanics, pharmacy staff, sanitation workers, and appliance repair workers. Born into a musical family, Marty sang in choirs her entire life and encouraged her children to express their musical talents. She loved to stay busy with her hands and always had needle art projects going (knitting, crocheting, cross-stitch, embroidery). With the mask shortage during the pandemic, Marty made hundreds of washable masks and provided them to friends, family, businesses, and anyone she met. The quilting ministry she was a member of made hundreds of quilts that are shipped globally to those in need. Marty was active with her Alamo Heights High School class reunions, luncheons, and mutual support.

Marty will be remembered for her generous spirit and her kind heart. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
