Margery Elizabeth Henry Erp was born October 21, 1935 in Dallas, TX to teenage parents Nettie Jane Powe and Richard Yeargin. She was adopted at 18 days in San Antonio by Earl and Thelma Aten Henry and taken to Houston, where she grew up and was part of the graduating class of 1953 at San Jacinto High School.
On March 9, 1957, she married the love of her life, Glen Erp, a pilot and 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, in a marriage that lasted until his death on November 8, 2017. Glen encouraged and facilitated her starting college in 1971 at Anchorage (AK) Community College (AA Psychology 1973), continued at Trinity University (BA Sociology 1975) and finally at Our Lady of the Lake University (MSW Social Work 1984), both in San Antonio, TX.
She loved her chosen profession of Social Work and carried it out at CPS (Child Protective Services) in Investigations, Village Oaks (now NE Methodist Hospital) and Methodist Hospitals. She continued in her Social Work career at Hospice of San Antonio and Hospice Home Care as well as working part-time for some Hospices to fill in until they had enough patients for a full-time Social Worker. She moved into Long Term Care at Normandy Terrace NH, Mariner NH, the Forum Health Care Center and the Army Residence Community (ARC) where she retired in 2017 at the age of 82.
Margery was an inveterate volunteer, working with Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and High Adventures Explorer Post. She was also a Red Cross volunteer at several Air Force hospitals, and BAMC in San Antonio. Her favorite volunteer job was at Andrews AFB (now Joint Base Andrews in Prince Georges County, MD), where she went out at midnight with a team to meet airplanes coming in from Vietnam with injured American troops, who would overnight at Andrews, get cleaned up, fed and make a telephone call home. She also worked with Air Force Family Services, Officers Wives Clubs, PWOC (Protestant Women of the Chapel) and Sports Leagues on bases as well as at the various Lutheran churches they attended. She and her husband, Glen also volunteered with the San Antonio Lutheran Coronation where all of their children participated.
Margery made it a point to attend any (and most) of her children’s activities – gymnastics, choir and band concerts, drill team, track meets, basketball and football games, and school events. Even once they were out of school, she continued following their activities, as well as those of her grandchildren, as long as her health allowed.
She thoroughly enjoyed baking and decorating cakes for birthdays, weddings, church functions and many more.
Margery and Glen were Spurs Season Ticket Holders (STH) since 1973, the first year the Spurs came to San Antonio. One of her goals was to be a STH for 50 years (which she achieved). Glen was a Spurs fan, literally, until the moment of his death. Very special thanks to Jay Winbush, their Season Ticket representative.
Margery was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Glen, and half-siblings Doug Corley, Joan Yeargin Sparks, John Yeargin and Judy Yeargin Sargent. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Jeffrey (Shirley) Erp, Glenda (Robert) Bastian and Cyndi (Dan) Long, her grandchildren, Sarah (Michael) Burke, Greg (Alyssa Reinhart) Erp, Jonathan (Stephanie) Bostick, Curtis Bostick, Rob Bastian and Chris Bastian (fiancé Brittany Woodard). She is also survived by her great-granddaughters, Hazel Lynne, London Elizabeth and Zoey Ann and her great-grandson, Wyatt Patrick; her half-siblings, Loretta Yeargin, John Corley, Susan Corley and Robert Corley, nephews, Ron Corley, Jamie Sargent and niece, Kimberly Chaffi, as well as many nieces and nephews on Glen’s side.
