Luis A. Rivera, a devoted educator and beloved family man, passed away on March 11, 2026 in San Antonio, Texas. Born on June 8, 1945, in Toa Alta, Puerto Rico, Luis led a life marked by dedication, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to both his profession and family.
Luis was a scientifically minded individual whose passion for the natural world and education shone brightly in much of what he did. Luis graduated from the University of Puerto Rico with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He then taught high school biology in Toa Alta until 1973, which was the year that he received the Teacher of the Year award. Luis is remembered as an enthusiastic, creative teacher who had excellent rapport with his students.
Beyond the classroom Luis was a gifted handyman and mechanic. In his 20’s and 30’s, while teaching full-time, Luis was known by family and friends as the person to go to if you needed almost anything fixed. From washing machines, to televisions, to cars, he could figure out how to repair it. This passion and creativity persisted throughout much of his life.
An admirer of the great outdoors, Luis found comfort and joy in nature’s embrace. He loved nearly all living creatures. Luis helped care for many pets throughout his life- birds, cats, dogs, fish, turtles, a goat, to name a few. Almost all of these pets lived exceedingly long, happy lives under his care.
One of Luis's favorite activities was playing the guitar at family get-togethers, and especially during the Puerto Rican Christmas season. Luis would get together with friends who played musical instruments and liked to sing traditional Puerto Rican Christmas songs. They would go caroling (singing parrandas) to the homes of friends and neighbors, who would then invite them in for traditional food and drinks of the season. In addition to playing music, Luis enjoyed dancing to the both traditional and modern rhythms of Puerto Rico. He also loved playing dominoes with his family members nearly every weekend.
Luis enjoyed exploring parts of Puerto Rico that he had not previously visited, such as the interior of the island and some of the southern coast. He enjoyed exploring beaches, the rainforest (El Yunque), and increasing his knowledge of the flora and fauna of the varied regions of Puerto Rico.
Luis was a loving, devoted father and grandfather, known for his protective, nurturing spirt and sense of humor. His fondness for children was evident in the warmth and attention he gave his family, proving himself to be an excellent parent and presence in their lives. His legacy will live on through his loving, supportive wife of 42 years, Blanca Rivera, his former wife of 5 years, Claire Riser; his daughter and sons, Lenora (Jay), Luis (Crystal), and Abner; and his cherished grandchildren, James, Arabella, Madeline, Elian, Julian, and Emilia; who held a special place in his heart. He also leaves behind his brothers, Tomas and Rafael (Norma), his brothers-in-law Manuel and German, mother-in-law Cruz and numerous nieces and nephews, who will remember him fondly.
Luis’s life was also shaped by the memories and love of those who preceded him: his parents, Roberto and Eladia; his sister Flor; his brother Roberto; and sisters-in-law Arcadia and Belen, whose spirits remain with him in peace.
We will come together to honor and remember Luis A. Rivera at Puente & Sons Funeral Chapels, Northeast, located at 14315 Judson Rd, San Antonio, TX 78233. A series of commemorative services will be held on March 25, 2026, beginning with a Memorial Service starting at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life from 11:00 a.m., concluding with a Rosary at 11:30 a.m.
Luis’ dedication to education, his remarkable talents, and his boundless love for his family and the natural world have left an indelible mark. He is remembered with respect, admiration, and affection. His life was a testament to the values of devotion, science, and compassion- a legacy that will continue to inspire his family. May he rest in eternal peace.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Humane Society of San Antonio in Luis’s honor.
