Juan was born on May 24, 1927, in General Trevino, Mexico. He was the beloved son of Juan Jose Velasquez Sr. and Elida Velasquez. When he was a baby, Juan moved with his family to Dilley, TX for a better life. He attended school there, and as a young teen started helping his family with chores on the ranch where his father was employed. In 1945 he attempted to enlist in the military to serve during World War II but was not eligible due to health issues. Juan didn’t allow this to stop him helping with the war effort for his country and he went to work for the railroad to help move German prisoners.
In the 1950’s he joined his family working with harvest crews in Michigan, Indiana, and Texas. Juan became a driver and hauled work crews to harvest locations. Outside of work, he learned to play guitar and started a singing trio called “Mejor Que Nada”. The group played weddings, debut parties, and at other festivities.
While working in Indiana, Juan would meet a beautiful young woman named Maria “Mary” Louisa Tamez, who three months later would become his wife on January 22, 1950. Seven children were born to this union.
In 1957, after moving to San Antonio, TX, Juan was encouraged by his brother to take the US Postal exam. He passed and was quickly hired and started his career with the US Postal Service in 1958. He served as a mail carrier serving west San Antonio for 31 years. He also served as the shop steward for the local postal union for many years.
Juan, his wife “Mary”, and their children loved camping in Garner State Park near Concan, TX, and enjoyed family trips to a friends’ summer home in Corpus Christi, TX, and eventually purchased land in Mathis, TX. near Corpus Christi and enjoyed many getaway trips there.
Juan was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His journey on this earth was one marked by love, compassion, and unwavering faith in God. His passing has left a tremendous void in the hearts of his family, friends, and many more whose lives were touched by him.
Juan was preceded in death by his wife Mary (2008); his parents; brothers Jose Regulo (Estella) Velasquez and Armando Velasquez; and daughter Rosemary Mullins.
Juan is survived by his daughters Raquel (Michael) Spiegel of Gulf Shores, AL, and Rebecca (John) Jones, and sons Robert (Laura) Velasquez, Luie Velasquez, Roland (Esther) Velasquez, and David (Nanette) Velasquez all of San Antonio, TX, and son-in-law Lowell Mullins of Dallas, TX. He also leaves behind 25 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchild, and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
