With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for the life he shared with us, we remember John Russell Smouse, who passed away peacefully at home on August 7, 2026, at the age of 46. He was lovingly surrounded by his devoted wife, cherished daughter and loyal pup in his final moments, a reflection of the love and warmth that marked every day of his life.
Born on July 30, 1980, in San Antonio, John’s journey began in a city that would always be home. A 1999 graduate of Breckenridge High School, his youthful enthusiasm and vibrant spirit were apparent from the start. John’s legacy is one of kindness—he never encountered a stranger, only friends not yet met. His laughter and unfailing ability to bring joy to others seemed unstoppable, even during the most difficult days of his illness. Above all, John cared deeply for those around him; he was the one who, irrespective of his circumstances, made sure everyone else was okay.
John found a lifelong partner and soulmate in his wife, Sandra Smouse in 2001. To Sandra, he was everything—her best friend and the love of her life. Their bond was unbreakable and inspiring, creating a foundation of strength and comfort for all who knew them. Their daughter, Makayla, was the light of John’s world. She was his pride and joy—his “end all be all”—and there was never a moment John wasn’t thinking of her happiness or future.
John was also a proud and loving dog dad to Logan, who's energy and pure love got him through some of the darkest days. The Smouse family’s love extended far and wide, and John treasured the connections that shaped his world.
John’s warmth radiated out to his extended family. He is survived by uncles Tom, Jeff, and Jon Beckmann. His life was enriched by sisters-in-law Brittany, Brandie, and Erica; brothers-in-law Ricky, CJ, and Stephen; and the six he was so proud to be an uncle to - nieces Alina, Adalyn, Brooklyn, and Riley, and nephews Braven and Brixton, each of whom will carry forward their uncle’s spirit of generosity and joy. John was also blessed with the steadfast encouragement of his father-in-law and dear friend Curtis, and mothers-in-law Yolanda and Karen. His dear friend Cindy also brought comfort and joy in his final years. Also surviving him is his bonus daughter Hailly and her parents Jeff and Jennifer. Special thanks to the countless others who loved and supported John and his family throughout every stage of life... cousins and bonus families, customers and friends.
For 15 years, John was a proud HEB partner, dedicating himself to his work with loyalty and camaraderie. His time at HEB #33 and #48 was marked not just by professional achievement, but by genuine friendships. Heartfelt thanks go to Will, Melissa, Celina, Stan and Joseph—colleagues who stood by John and supported his family in every way. As well as so many others in the HEB community. Their kindness will never be forgotten.
John’s passions ran deep. He loved the thrilling adventures found in Star Wars and the soaring scores of John Williams. Sports were a source of pure happiness; he reveled in every game played by his beloved Spurs, Cowboys, and Astros. These joys were the backdrop of his days, often shared with friends and family who delighted in his enthusiasm.
In the most challenging times, John’s resilience was bolstered by exceptional caregivers. The family is eternally grateful to Dr. Vijay Gunuganti, whose compassionate care gave them three more precious years with John. Their appreciation also extends to Amanda at Texas Oncology, Dr. Rodriguez at Next Oncology, and Guiding Light Hospice—especially nurse Richard—for the comfort, hope, and kindness shown to John and his loved ones throughout his journey.
To the end, John’s selflessness and humor never dimmed. Even as he faced tremendous challenges, he continued to lift the spirits of everyone around him, quick with a smile and always reminding others of the goodness in life.
Family, friends, and all who were touched by John’s remarkable spirit are invited to gather and celebrate his life. A memorial service will be held at Northeast - Puente & Sons Funeral Chapels, 14315 Judson Rd, San Antonio, TX 78233 on August 28, 2026, from 5-8pm with a rosary being recited by beloved cousin Rudy Torres beginning at 6:30 p.m. Together, we will honor and remember the love, laughter, and unwavering kindness that defined John Russell Smouse, a man who leaves behind a legacy of compassion and joy that will live on in all who knew him.
