Jerry Don Gillaspia, 80, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on June 2, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas.
Born on July 27, 1944, in Bowie, Texas, Jerry grew up with a deep appreciation for the simple things in life and a strong work ethic that carried him through an impressive 44-year career in banking. As Senior Vice President of Operations with Kelly Field National Bank, he took immense pride in honoring military personnel stationed all over the world by providing specialized banking programs in support of military life. He continued leading with integrity through several bank acquisitions and retired from Wells Fargo Banks in 2003.
Beyond his successful career, Jerry found pleasure in multiple areas. He was passionate about building model cars from the 50s and 60s era. His intricate cars reflected his great attention to detail. He also created sprawling towns around his model railroads replicating actual cityscapes.
Jerry poured his love for the outdoors into his beautifully landscaped yard, where he personally planted every tree and shrub. He took great pride in keeping his grass thriving under the relentless Texas sun. Summers were especially precious to him, as he relished every moment by his pool or at the beach. He never got tired of basking in the sun, watching the waves, enjoying a cold beer and playing cornhole with his family.
A suburban cowboy at heart, Jerry never passed up an opportunity for country-western dancing. He could be found at many a dusty Texas dance hall, two-stepping the night away to old country songs and the natural rhythm of the crowd. His passion for classic western music and films never faded, he never grew tired of the outlaw’s seeing justice and straight shooters getting the loving gal. As a lifelong natural athlete, he spent endless nights playing and managing softball teams. His old teammates and opponents will remember his pitching talent and ability to easily hit home runs. He never missed an opportunity to watch his Cowboys, Astros and beloved San Antonio Spurs. Jerry learned to appreciate basketball as a competitive player in his youth. He was a member of the South San High School state basketball championship team. Jerry’s favorite movie was Hoosiers, fittingly, as a lover of all things hard-work and old-school.
His infectiously sly smile, kind heart and deep generosity of spirit left a mark on everyone he met. A Celebration of Life to honor Jerry will be held at his favorite Mexican restaurant, giving those who knew him an opportunity to gather over good Mexican food, cold margaritas, and live mariachi music - a combination that always gave his heart joy.
Jerry is succeeded by his wife of 37 years, Lisa Gillaspia, who was the love of his life. He will be dearly missed by his children Michael, Steven, Jennifer, and Grayson, as well as his grandchildren, a large extended family and countless friends. Jerry’s ashes will be scattered in the Gulf of Mexico, where he found peace and happiness. May his memory continue to bring comfort and joy to those who knew him.
