It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Hilda Suro Cortes, age 91, who passed away in the company of her son Hector on the afternoon of Monday, July 21, 2025, in Live Oak, Texas.
Hilda was born in Guadalajara, Mexico. She is preceded in death by her parents, Remigio and Josefina, beloved brother David, and sister Judith. She is survived by her ex-husband Miguel; her children Miguel Jr. (Maria), Hilda Jr., Oscar (Debbie), and Hector (Liz); five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters Marta, Rosa, Tete, Yolanda, and Muñeca; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins
Hilda came to the U.S. in 1960 with her husband Miguel, who served in the U.S. Air Force for 26 years. After his service, they both settled down near San Antonio, TX. Hilda took on various jobs throughout her life and eventually studied cosmetology, becoming the owner of Belinda's Hair Salon on West Hildebrand in San Antonio, TX.
Hilda loved to crochet: to make ornate receiving outfits for her grandchildren's birth and 1st-Christmas stockings for her twin granddaughters; to make toilet paper cover doll dresses, doilies, table cloths, purses, bags, and clothes.
She would blend vegetables and fruits into tasty and nutritious juice shakes or smoothies. She also enjoyed cooking, telling her granddaughters, "Watch and learn for memory, no recipe book." For special occasions, she would make six-course meals that included tasty pozole, lentil soup, mole, albóndigas, homemade corn tortillas, and more. She would also bake a delicious, light flan every now and then.
She enjoyed hanging out with the good friends she made during various Air Force deployments, and listening to upbeat Latin American music, including "La Sonora Santanera", Mariachi, and Ranchera, and encouraged her children to learn to play an instrument.
Many thanks to Maribel for arranging a novenario for Hilda at the Iglesia de San Cayetano in Mexico City, and to Edgardo and Laura for arranging the mass intentions for Hilda on August 7, 8, and 9 at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Helotes.
A reception will be held after the Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Refreshments will be provided.
The interment service will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, Wed. Aug 13, at 11 am
