With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Gregory Joe Ortiz, who died on July 6, 2026, at the age of 64. Greg was born on March 11, 1962, in Topeka, Kansas, and moved to San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 12. He called San Antonio home for the rest of his life. He was the son of Angelita and Rito Ortiz Sr., who preceded him in death.
Greg graduated from James Madison High School in 1980. After graduation, he proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1982 to 1986, working on electronic panels for F-16 planes. After leaving the Air Force, he continued his career at Randolph Air Force Base.
He is survived by his two sons, Gregory Joe Ortiz Jr. and Christopher Ray Ortiz; his grandchildren, Nathan Gregory Ortiz, Aubrey Lynn Ortiz, Alejandro Ortiz, Isabella Ortiz, and Rosalinda Ortiz; and his great-grandchildren who reside in San Antonio. He is also survived by his brothers, Rito Ortiz Jr. and his wife, Sylvia, of Austin, Texas; Michael Ortiz and his wife, Luisa, of San Diego, California; and Ralph Ortiz and his wife, Mayra Maggio-Ortiz, of San Antonio, Texas. He also leaves behind uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews in Kansas and Missouri.
Greg was generous, kind, and friendly, with a smile that made others smile along with him. He loved spending time with family and friends, sharing good food, and enjoying simple moments together. In his younger years, he enjoyed time with friends and an ice-cold beer; later, he often reached for a cold Pepsi. He loved Mexican food, American food, pizza, and especially his mother’s home-cooked meals, which she always prepared with love. He enjoyed the comfort of wearing his Levi’s jeans and sandals. We will miss him very much and will never forget the memories and wonderful times we shared.
Thank you for being a loving son, brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather, nephew, uncle, and wonderful friend. We are grateful for the time we had with you and for the memories we will always carry in our hearts.
