Listen to Obituary

Edward Charles Ramirez served his country, helped build the cars that made his home town famous, married the love of his life and raised three children.

He died Saturday at home and surrounded by family after losing his battle with dementia. He was 80. His family and friends called him Eddie or Ed or Mr. Ed. His name conjured so much respect, honor and affection, that it was bestowed upon his first grandson.

Born in Detroit on July 16, 1945, to Charles P. and Celia Ramirez, he grew up on Detroit’s east side. After graduating from Northeastern High School in Detroit, Mr. Ramirez joined his father and older brother at Chrysler Corp.’s Jefferson Plant.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army and met his future wife, Ruth, while stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. Edward and Ruth married and he returned to Chrysler, but at its Warren truck plant. The couple had Charlie, Lisa and Matthew.

At first glance, Ramirez could seem intimidating due to his size and stern expression, but they belied his gentle nature, friendliness, quick wit and wicked sense of humor. Outside of work, Ramirez enjoyed bowling, Detroit sports teams, was a huge music fan — especially Motown, rock and roll and blues — and spending time with his family. He imparted to his children wisdom, the work ethic the Motor City is known for, the same devotion to family. He shared too many memories and laughs to mention. Mr. Ramirez was proud of his time as a soldier and welcomed it when strangers stopped him to thank him for his service.

He is survived by his three children and 10 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
