Beatrice V. Peña

July 3, 1937 — May 18, 2021

Beatrice “Bea” Valdez Peña born July 3, 1937 in San Antonio, Texas passed away on
Tuesday May 18, 2021 at the age of 83.

Bea was a graduate of Fox Tech High School class of 1955. She was an active Red
Jacket member, Pre Nurse Club member, Press Club member, Garden Club member
and president, and Junior and Senior Representative.

Bea was a proud military wife and though she traveled the country and lived part of her
life in Brownsville, Texas, she always called San Antonio home. She was an active
member of St. Helena Catholic Church and a faithful servant of God. Throughout her
life, Bea was known to everyone she met as a sweet woman with the most amazing
smile despite the many challenges of her life. Bea was declared legally blind in 1983 but
she did not let her circumstances keep her from living life. She loved to listen to
audiobooks and spend time talking with family and dear friends (especially on the
phone). Bea loved being a mother, but was so grateful to become a grandmother (or
“Nana” as she was known) and share special memories with her children and
grandchildren. And it wasn’t just those immediately related to her that considered her
family - many of her children’s friends called her “Mom” and so many regarded her as
an adopted sister.

Bea is preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Maclovio Peña Jr. of San
Antonio; and her parents, Carlos Valdez and Beatriz Fuentes Valdez of San Antonio.
Bea was the last living sibling of 5 children. She is preceded in death by her brothers
and sisters-in-law: Carlos and Yolanda Valdez of San Antonio; Jose Armando and
Connie Valdez of San Antonio; Emeterio and Patricia Valdez of California; and Oscar
Valdez of Bandera, Texas. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia M. Peña of
Baytown, Texas; her son, Mark S. Peña of San Antonio; her grandchildren, Rebecca,
Christian and David Conejo of Baytown, Texas; her sister-in-law, Tina Valdez of
Bandera, Texas (wife of Oscar); her canine companion, Holly Peña; and countless
nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, particularly those of the Low Vision Club.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of BAMC and PAM-SASH
who treated Bea with compassion, respect and dignity before her unexpected passing.

The family will receive those who wish to pay their respects from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m on
Saturday June 5, 2021 at Puente & Sons Funeral Chapels, 14315 Judson Rd, San
Antonio, Texas 78233. Rosary to start at 3:30 p.m. The family asks that those that
attend wear bright colors as Bea was happiest when she was able to see bright colors
due to her blindness. Burial will be held on Friday June 18, 2021 at 9:00 a.m. at Fort

Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, Texas
78209.
