Arthur Henry Dolt, Jr.

Oct 1, 1942 — Jul 5, 2026

Arthur Henry Dolt, Jr. ("Artie"), passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and loved ones on Sunday, July 5, 2026. He was 83 and leaves behind a legacy of love, music, kindness, style, and joy that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Artie lived life with a song in his heart and a smile on his face. His greatest passion was music, especially the rich harmonies of barbershop singing. Whether performing with fellow singers or sharing music with family and friends, he found deep happiness in bringing people together through song. His enthusiasm was contagious, and his love of harmony reflected the way he lived his life—with warmth, generosity, laughter, and friendship.

Over a musical journey that spanned more than 66 years, Artie became a legendary figure in the Barbershop Harmony Society and left an indelible mark on generations of singers. He began directing men’s and women’s choruses at the age of 18 and went on to lead many choruses, including the Montclair Men’s Chorus in Teaneck, New Jersey; the Border Chorders in El Paso, Texas; and the Chordsmen in San Antonio, Texas. He carried this passion throughout his life, most recently founding the Friends in Harmony men’s chorus and The Harmony Belles women’s chorus in San Antonio. He also sang bass in numerous quartets, including The Hallmarks, The Crowning Touch, The Rogues of the Rio Grande, and many others.

More important than any title or accomplishment was the way Artie made people feel. He never met a stranger, and his warmth, encouragement, and genuine interest in others touched countless lives. Everyone who crossed his path was welcomed with a smile and soon became a friend. His favorite quote, by Henry van Dyke, perfectly captured the philosophy by which he lived:

"Use what talents you possess. The woods would be silent if no birds sang except those that sang best."

Artie also had a signature sense of style that was unmistakably his own. He had a special fondness for the color orange, wearing it proudly as an expression of his vibrant personality. Sunflowers, with their brilliant golden blooms, were among his favorite flowers and perfectly reflected the cheerful spirit and optimism he brought into every room. Rarely was he seen without a fresh boutonniere adorning his jacket—a daily tradition that became one of his trademarks and reflected his appreciation for beauty, elegance, and living each day with purpose.

His appreciation for artistry extended beyond music. Blessed with beautiful penmanship and a remarkable gift for calligraphy, Artie delighted in the handwritten note and believed words carried greater meaning when thoughtfully penned by hand. He also faithfully completed The New York Times crossword puzzle each day—always in ink, never pencil—a quiet testament to his sharp mind, confidence, discipline, and lifelong love of learning.

Above all, Artie cherished his family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and loyal friend whose gentle spirit, generous heart, and unwavering love left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He believed that life’s greatest blessings were often its simplest—a beautiful melody, a warm conversation, a fresh flower, laughter shared with friends, and time spent with those he loved. He always said, “The best place to be is together.”

Though his voice has fallen silent, the harmony he created in the lives of others will continue to resonate for generations. His memory will live on in every familiar song, every bright splash of orange, every sunflower in bloom, every fresh boutonniere, every carefully handwritten note, and every chorus that welcomes a new singer with open arms.

Artie is survived by his beloved wife, Diana, with whom he just celebrated their 20th anniversary; his former wife, Carol, with whom he shared 35 years of marriage; his children, Dr. Arthur Henry “Skip” Dolt, III (Elaine), Jennifer Cannatti (Phillip), and Garrett Dolt (Cathleen); his grandchildren, Caitlin, Allison, Arthur “Henry” Dolt, IV, Wesley (Lucy), Audrey (Nick), and Nina; Diana’s children, Ruben Piña, Jr. (Laura), Jennifer Piña Herrera (Francisco), Vanessa Valdez (Juanita); Diana’s grandchildren, Abigail, Ruben, Thalia, Jonah, and Frankie, Jr.; his sisters, Janice Pierro (Tom) and Lois Jasper (Jeff); and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Artie will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family, friends, and the countless lives he blessed through his legacy of love, faith, fellowship, joy, and a life beautifully lived.
