Rosario Escamilla

June 10, 1946 — October 28, 2020

Rosario Escamilla, age 74, died in her home after a long battle with breast cancer on October 28, 2020.

She is survived by her five children (and five grandchildren): Yvette Arevalos (spouse Ryan Arevalos and children Alexa - 18, Nick - 13, and Avery - 9); Yvonne Finney (spouse John Finney); Chris Escamilla (spouse Cynthia and children Matthew - 9 and Michael -7); Mary Escamilla, and Sara Escamilla. She is preceded in death by her husband, Dionisio Escamilla, Jr.

Rosario was born on June 10, 1946 in Kingsville, TX and was a 1964 graduate of Henrietta M. King High School. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Texas A&I (now Texas A&M University Kingsville) and a Master of Education from the University of Cincinnati. After receiving her Masters, she and her husband moved to San Antonio to raise their family in 1971.

She was a champion of education who spent her career as an educator, both as a teacher and counselor at San Antonio area schools including; Kennedy High School, Lowell Middle School, Mac Arthur High School, Seguin ISD, Edgwood ISD, and New Frontiers Charter School. Her impact on students, coworkers, and their lives was immense. She was especially proud of her successful fundraising efforts for New Frontiers which helped inner city children thrive.

She also enjoyed fashion, reading, sewing, watching Hallmark movies and true crime shows, thrifting, hosting prayer groups, lifting others up in prayer, hanging with her dog Pippín, attending St. Helena Catholic Church, and most of all spending time with her grandkids.

Besides her children, Rosario is survived by her mother, Antonia C. Rios, her sister, Martha Alegria, her brother Robert Alegria, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her husband Dionisio Escamilla Jr. as well as her father, Donaciano Rivera, brother, Donaciano Rivera, Jr., stepfather, Eugenio R. Rios, grandmother, Petra Arreola Garza, and in-laws Dionisio Sr. and Mary Montemayor Escamilla, as well as many adored extended family members.

To our mother, we must thank you for your steadfast belief in us, for your strong faith that taught us to rely on God at all times, for your unwavering strength through all difficulties in life, for your joy in family time— and happiness at the small things in life; and for the support, prayers and help given to us at every stage in life. We love you. We are at peace knowing you are with Dad and Nanie. We know your spirit will always be with us. May you rest in the loving arms of Jesus.

Visitation will be held at St. Helena Catholic Church in San Antonio, TX on Friday, November 6, 2020 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., with a rosary to follow at 10:00 a.m. The funeral will be held at St. Helena on the same day at 10:30 a.m. Burial services will follow. All guests are required to wear masks and observe social distancing. All are welcome to attend.
