Gary Dean Hankins

August 11, 1959 — September 20, 2020

Gary Hankins passed away suddenly, in his home in San Antonio, TX,
on Sunday, September 20, 2020. He was just 1 month passed his 61st
Birthday. He is beloved by all, and he is gone from us, and it is such a
shock. It seems to us all, that he was taken from us, far too soon.

Gary was born in Rock Island, IL, on August 11, 1959. Gary is
preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Evelyn Hankins, his Aunt
Leila McNeil, and his uncles, Ernie and Harold McNeil. Gary is survived
by his loving wife of 38 years, Marilyn Hankins. Gary is also survived by
his sons, Jason, Bryan, and Evan Hankins; his daughter, Ashley
Hankins; his grandchildren, Jasmine and Jacob Hankins; his Father and
Mother-In-Law, Patrick and Lillian Gluba; and his honorary “daughter,”
Kiki Gonzalez. Gary also leaves behind his faithful Golden Retrievers,
Leia, and Daisy.

Gary earned his MBA at St. Ambrose University, in Davenport, Iowa.
He worked as a Contract Price/Cost Analyst for HQ AMCCOM, located
on Arsenal Island, in Rock Island, IL. In 1993, Gary moved his family to
San Antonio, TX, where he would eventually, become a Healthcare
Contracting Officer, at Fort Sam Houston. Gary retired in 2016, after 32
years, serving as a civilian for the United States Army, Army Medical
Command, the Department of Defense, and the United States Federal
Government. Gary loved his work; he was dedicated, hard-working,
knowledgeable, professional, and conscientious and strived for
excellence in all the work that he did. Gary loved being a help to his
colleagues, as well.

Gary loved cheering on the San Antonio Spurs, the Iowa Hawkeyes,
and the Kansas City Chiefs. He also had a bit of a side interest, in
putting together model kits. Gary enjoyed getting together with his
family and his former co workers, with whom he enjoyed sharing stories
of his life, and work experiences. More than anything, however, Gary
enjoyed spending time with his wife, 4 children, 2 grandchildren and the
rest of his family. He shared with his family his love of Disney World and
took them to Orlando as often as he was able. He was not one to say
the words, “I love You”, in words, often – instead, Gary showed his love
of his family, through his actions, making as sure that they were happy,
healthy and comfortable in life, as possible. He treated Marilyn’s
Parents, with great love, respect, and much kindness, as if they were
his very own parents. (Unfortunately, Gary had lost both of his own
parents, Lloyd and Evelyn, many years previous.)

Although, Gary was not a very openly religious man, he still held his
relationship with God, privately, and close to his heart. He was humble,
caring, hard-working, and he had a great dry sense of humor. He was
both a wonderful and amazing husband and father, and always, a great
provider. Gary was also an awesome grandfather, and a caring,
dependable, and true friend.

Gary’s time on earth with us was cut short, and he left us, far too soon.
We all deeply miss him, and we are greatly saddened by his loss.
However, he enriched the lives of those that were privileged to know
him, and his kind generosity while he was here, with us. We will forever
cherish and keep his memory alive, in our hearts.
