Fredrick Gregory Pitner

December 24, 1953 — August 25, 2019

On Sunday, August 25, 2019, Greg Pitner, loving husband, father and papa passed away unexpectedly at the age of 65 surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on December 24, 1953 in San Antonio, TX to Fred and Ruth Pitner.

Greg graduated from John Jay High School in 1971 and went on to play semi-pro football for the San Antonio Eagles. He committed himself to a lifelong career in customer service in the home improvement industry. For 41 years Greg worked in an industry he loved and met so many amazing friends along the way. Over those 41 years Greg worked for Handy Dan, Builder’s Square, Home Depot and he even co-hosted a DIY radio show for 8 years on WOAI.

During his life’s journey he met and married the love of his life, Sandy a.k.a. Honey. They recently celebrated 43 years of marriage and spent countless hours driving the back roads of South Texas waving at the black cows and enjoying each other’s company. Greg and Sandy were blessed with 1 son, Christopher Pitner. Chris brought 2 beautiful women into the family circle when he married Jennifer and they gave birth to the light of Papa Greg’s life, Carlie a.k.a. Tiger. Papa always said Carlie was his heart and that she gave him a renewed lease on life.

Greg loved to spend time hunting, fishing, cooking and relaxing in his rocking chair on the front porch. He was a great conversationalist, a gifted writer, and a great influencer to so many. Being the loving and caring man that he was, Greg opened his home to many over the years and made them an instant part of his family. He was an avid UT fan and loved to watch football, baseball, little league ball, and especially his granddaughter Carlie play softball. Papa was always one of the biggest fans at the ball field and cheered on all the girls just like they were his own!

He is proceeded in death by his parents Fred and Ruth Pitner, his in-laws Rudolph and Blanche Hare, sister-in-law Janice Hare, brother-in-law’s Michael Crossley, Jim Criss and Ron Whitaker. Survivors include his wife Sandy Pitner, son Chris Pitner and wife Jennifer Pitner, granddaughter Carlie Pitner, sister Terry Wilson-Whitaker, sister’s in law JoAnn Crossley, Tammy Criss and brother-in-law Bill Hare and wife Linda Hare.
