Edward Gibson Vaughan

November 22, 1948 — February 18, 2021

On Thursday February 18, 2021, Edward Gibson Vaughan, beloved father, husband, and friend, passed away at the age of 72.

Ed was born on November 22, 1948, to Spruill James and Martha (Gibson) Vaughan. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1967. He completed a course in International Law at the City of London College, London, England in 1970. Ed received his Bachelor of Arts in Finance from the University of Texas in 1971 and his Juris Doctor from St. Mary’s University in 1974. On April 2, 1994, Ed married Kimberly Gale McDonald. They raised their daughter, Ashley Gale.

Ed’s legal career spanned 46 years. He was a formidable champion for South Texas ranchers and businesses and was an invaluable resource to them for his extensive knowledge of oil and gas law and farm and ranch real estate. He was instrumental in defending and preserving the water rights of farmers and ranchers in the Edward’s Aquifer area.

Ed served as a Director of Security State Bank of Pearsall; Advisory Director of First State Bank of Uvalde; Director of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association; Director of The Former Texas Rangers Foundation; and Advisory Director of the Texas Agricultural Land Trust. Ed formerly served as Chairman of the Texas Water Development Board; President, Chairman and Director of the Texas Lyceum; Director of the Texas State Chamber of Commerce; Director of the Uvalde Chamber of Commerce; and Director of the Texas Association of Bank Counsel. Ed and his family were members of the Argyle in San Antonio, Texas.

Ed had a strong passion for the outdoors. As a young man, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He loved fishing and spending time outside in God’s creation. From Alaska to Belize and beyond, he relished the peaceful moments spent in or by the waters of the world. Ed also maintained his pilot’s license for most of his life and enjoyed the world as much from the air as on the ground. He was known for his fierce desire to help those around him and his beaming smile, though rare, that lit the room with an infectious light.

Ed was preceded in death by his father, James, and his mother, Martha. He is survived by his wife, Kimberly, his daughter, Ashley, and her husband, Jacob Stercula, his sister, Betty Kirk Brown, his niece and nephew Kelsey Marin and Gibson McDowell, and one great nephew, Gregory Marin.
